The History of Schiller

The History of Schiller

Schiller International University was founded in 1964 as Schiller College by Dr. Walter Leibrecht in Kleiningersheim Castle, overlooking the Neckar River, in Southern Germany. Dr. Leibrecht established a traditional American Study Abroad program in Germany with English as the language of instruction. American students were given the opportunity to experience life and studies in Europe for one or two semesters, or for the duration of an entire degree program.

Following the German tradition of naming a school after an historic figure, the college was named in honor of Friedrich von Schiller, 1759 - 1805, the German poet and philosopher of freedom. Schiller's work exemplifies the highest standards of ethics and the ideal of the truly educated, multilingual citizen of the world.

Between 1964 - 1974, Schiller International University expanded rapidly adding the Boennigheim Castle, Heidelberg campus, and campuses in Berlin, Paris, Strasbourg, Madrid and London.

Between 1975 - 1985 the school transitioned into an international university. During this period, the concept of providing inter-campus transfer became an integral part of the university. In 1983, the institution, now called Schiller International University, was accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Association of Independent Colleges and Schools (now called Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools). Throughout the next ten years, the university developed an International Hotel Management curriculum on its campuses in Strasbourg, Engelberg, and London.

In 1991, the campus in Dunedin, Florida, USA opened and was developed into the university's main campus by 1995. Also, the former American College of Switzerland (founded in 1963) became a campus of Schiller International University in 1991. In July 2006, the Florida campus moved to a new location in Largo, Florida.

Today, Schiller International University worldwide is a thriving, global education system offering graduate and undergraduate students the advantages of an international education.

I was fascinated to learn that Schiller College has expanded so widely, even to Florida. I was a Spring quarter student at the original Kleiningersheim campus in 1966. I studied Art & English literature. One course I took was not taught in English however, only in German – so I understood about every 5th word. Unfortunately I caught pneumonia in that old castle & didn’t return except in the summer to take make-up tests. I was sorry not to get to live in the Tower because of that. It was quite an adventure & learning experience to be there however. Do you have any connections with other people who attended in ‘66? I’d love to find my old roomie! Judy Alexander Gilmore
